When I worked for Focus on the Family, I was surprised to discover that one of the major Christian radio networks would not air our broadcasts if the subject covered anything political. They believed that Christians should not get involved in politics.
I wonder, then, how they interpret verses such as Romans 2:19-20?
". . . You yourself are a guide to the blind, a light to those who are in darkness, an instructor of the foolish, a teacher of the babes, having the form of knowledge and truth in the law."
Throughout history, godly people have been a guide to the blind. They have lighted dark places by holding up the light of truth. Though their voices often seem to be drowned out by the crowds, they have kept speaking. And because it was God speaking through them, the message was not lost.
For some reason, God did not institute some complicated and flawless computer program to keep the gospel truth alive throughout the centuries. While Jesus walked on this earth, He instructed us to be salt and light in the world (Matthew 5). Before He went away, He told us to go into all the world and preach the gospel and to be witnesses to Him in Jerusalem (local), Judea (national), Samaria (cross-cultural), and to the ends of the earth (Acts 1:8).
In the Old Testament, God chose a common Jewish woman named Esther for "such a time as this" (Es. 4:14) to accomplish the saving of His people. Imagine what would have happened if she had believed that the persuaded should not get involved in this political stuff--especially when the king threatened to annialate God's people. Instead she determined that even if it cost her life--and certainly her reputation--she would speak up (Es. 4:16). She didn't have to be perfect or without fault. Instead, she yielded and allowed God to speak and act through her to change the mind of the king and the course of history.
I believe, without a doubt, our command is the same today. We are still to be a guide and a light in the 2008 elections and for all the days following. Stand up for what's right, no matter how many voices proclaim what is wrong and let God do the rest. "For this is the will of God, that by doing good you may put to silence the ignorance of foolish men" (1 Pet. 2:15).
Don't forget to do so, however, in wisdom and in love. Seek God every day to see where He is putting you and what He's telling you to say. Then say and do it with all the love that Jesus would have shown to the dark world you're facing.
I believe our command is clear: Christians are to be involved in politics and every other part of our society. Light the way, guide the lost, be a spokesperson for God for such a time as this. All we have to do is be obedient. He does the rest.
