We recently bought a new car with a global positioning device (GPS). This incredible tool is a satellite-based navigation system made up of a network of 24 satellites placed into orbit by the U.S. Department of Defense. GPS was originally intended for military applications, but in the 1980s, the government made the system available for civilian use. GPS works in any weather conditions, anywhere in the world, 24 hours a day.
While we were driving the other day, Dave played with his new toy and said, "Just imagine. Some electronic eye is looking down on us knowing where we are and where we need to go to get to our destination."
My mind started racing through the double meaning in his words. I thought about how God's Global Positioning System (GGPS) has been in place long before any satellite swung into orbit. I thought about how He watches over the whole earth, but He also watches over each and every one of His children individually.
Two verses come to mind to help me picture this process most clearly:
First, "For the eyes of the Lord run to and fro throughout the whole earth, to show Himself strong on behalf of those whose heart is loyal to Him" (2 Chr. 16:9).
These words describe the amazing love and lavish blessings God bestows on His children. When my kids were young, I told them it was as if every home in the world who served God had a red roof. When God looked down in specific places and saw a red roof, He poured out His blessings and kept curses away.
I still think of this amazing truth in a similar way. God stays busy looking all around for the persuaded. People who are
loyal (NKJ version)
perfect (KJ version)
blameless (Amplified version)
completely committed (NAS version)
to God. And when He sees us, He finds ways to show Himself strong in each and every detail of our lives. Isn't that amazing?
Second, "I will guide you with My eye" (Ps. 32:8). Not only does God find, love and bless those under the red rooves in His world who are serving Him completely, He also guides them. He knows where we are and where we need to go. His voice is not the kind woman who guides on our GPS, but if we ask and listen, He just as surely lets us know what to do in each and every circumstance. In the car when we fail to go the direction the woman tells us, she doesn't reprimand. Instead, we hear the word "recalculating," and she creates a new direction for us to go that incorporates our mistake.
God does the same. We've all made mistakes, and ignored, misread, or stepped ahead of God's instructions. But with great love and mercy, He recalculates a new direction for our lives after the divorce or the bad business decision or the sin we have committed.
I like getting into the car knowing that no matter where I need to go, our GPS can show me the right way. No address is off limits.
But I love walking with God. No matter where I need to go, my GGPS will show me the way to go. No question or request is off limits. My GGPS works in any conditions of life, anywhere in the world, 24 hours a day.
He watches. He finds. He shows Himself strong. He guides. He helps us recalculate. That pretty much covers it all.
