After analyzing senators' votes on 99 key pieces of legislation in 2007, National Journal has concluded that Democratic presidential candidate Barack Obama was the "most liberal" member of the Senate. His rival for the Democratic nomination, Sen. Hillary Rodham Clinton, was ranked No. 16.
During this election season, Christians have had a hard time knowing who to get behind. Our choices are between one who is socially conservative, another who is militarily conservative, and still another who is economically conservative. No candidate possesses all three conservative requirements. We find ourselves thinking, how do I know who to support?
Jesus said, " 'By their fruits you will know them' " (Mt. 7:20). Based on this National Journal report, we know a lot about the fruits of the remaining two democratic nominees. But we need to keep watching and listening. We need to not only hear what all the candidates will do, but we need to examine what they have done. We need to watch to see how they respond to others and listen to see the issues they go to the mats for.
Above all, we need to keep praying. Pray that God will put into office the person He wants for this time and this place for this country. Pray that His people will be wise and make their voices known. And pray that secret things will be revealed: " 'For there is nothing covered that will not be revealed, nor hidden that will not be known' " (Lu. 12:2).
Again I remind you, God is not wringing His hands, clueless about what to do in this election. He doesn't want us to get panicky either. Anyone can say and do anything when they want something. But if we watch carefully, we'll truly know them by their fruits. And that will be the best indicator for who to support.
