At this point, the Republican frontrunner appears to be John McCain, and it appears that McCain's record shows is anything but conservative. Lots of pundits are reporting that the GOP is turning left. Do you think that is really true?
The GOP has traditionally (though not completely) reflected Christian values. Turning left would mean that those values have fallen by the wayside. That could only happen for two reasons: Either God and His laws are outdated and not applicable to our time OR His people aren't adequately championing His cause.
Since we know that God is all-knowing, ever-present, always true, and unchanging, we know that He has not grown out of style. That leaves only us. We're not spreading the message as we should. We're the method God left to keep the Good News alive for our generation. That doesn't mean others in more prominent places or with bigger names or platforms. It means you and me, individually, in the neighborhood where we live are assigned to make an impact.
I love the book of Joshua. His story is described in the Old Testament book by the same name. It helps us get to know a man who wholeheartedly served God (Num. 32:12) and became one of two men who got to enter the promised land. He led the next generation of Israelites into the place God had sworn to give them. Day by day, battle by battle, Joshua guided God's people and taught them how to serve Him for themselves.
Yet, in the next book of the Bible we read this:
"So the people served the Lord all the days of Joshua, and all the days of the elders who outlived Joshua, who had seen all the great works of the Lord which He had done for Israel. . . When all that generation had been gathered to their fathers, another generation arose after them who did not know the Lord nor the work which He had done for Israel" (Jud. 2:7; 10).
Wow! After all they'd seen God do (such as rolling back the Red Sea, making the sun stand still, and defeating every enemy they faced), somehow, someway, someone lay down on the job. They stopped carrying the gaunlet. They no longer told the next generation all the things that God had done in Israel. That made the truth lose its momentum.
There's only one way that the GOP will turn left, and that's if you and I grow silent. God will never lose His power and neither should we. I have encouraged you often to stay informed, make your voice heard, and pray hard for the elections at hand. I've shown you how to remain on top of current events and be prepared to defend and promote your faith in the face of them.
Don't be discouraged. We're not championing a lost cause. No matter how loud the opposition or how great the number of naysayers grow, remember, we win in the end. Speak up and act like the winners that we are! God still chooses to use you and me to keep the message vibrant and life-changing. To share it when we lie down and when we rise up (Deu. 11:19-20).
That's the only way we keep from turning left.
