Today I had the privilege of joining with others to intercede in prayer at the the Democratic National Convention. Eight of us gathered around a table to spend several hours talking to God about the event and the 2008 election as a whole.
What surprised me, however, were the many outreach efforts already taking place in the Denver area. 1 Church Metro Denver, for example, gathered people from all denominations for prayer and worship at a park that was centrally located between the Pepsi Center and the Convention Center. They used the park to offer prayer to those who were passing by as well as to serve them by giving out water and other needed supplies (like sunscreen) to make their experience in Denver an enjoyable one. What they didn't do was protest, make a statement, or take political sides. Their goal was to offer the service of the church with a humble heart.
Many conservatives watched the television coverage of the event with discouragement. But as a firsthand observer, I want you to be encouraged at what took place behind the scenes. Jesus told us that all we had to do is lift Him up, and He'd do the rest (Jn. 12:32). And you can be assured, there were lots of people lifting Him up.
