I feel overwhelmed and discouraged: Overwhelmed that there is so much around us that needs desperate praying and discouraged about who will do it. In my lifetime, I've never seen so much to cause concern--in my family, neighborhood, state, nation, and world.
My family's spiritual history began when I was six months old and my aunt was miraculously healed. The event brought my mom and dad to faith. They went immediately from darkness to light, and in the years that followed, they did everything they knew to learn about Jesus.
I grew up watching this kind of fervor for serving Christ. Even though they made mistakes in their immature enthusiasm, they knew where to go and how to get answers for really difficult circumstances. They brought into our lives others who also knew how to reach God. I always knew that Eddy, Randy, Becky, Ruth and others were ready and available to help us reach God and find answers.
Last week, I was doing some housework while listening to worship music. One of the songs praised God for His miracle-working power. I sang along with the song then stopped. I have heard through my whole life how God healed my aunt, but that was 55 years ago. I witnessed other miracles throughout my growing-up years, but that was then. What kinds of miracles am I seeing today? I've written before ( "Miracles As the End or the Means?" ) about how Jesus used miracles to draw people to Himself. Miracles were not the end in themselves, but Jesus used them so that people would come to Him.
So where are the miracles now? Who's doing them? Who's taking the time to find the answers? Who knows where to go to find the right way? Where are the Eddys, Randys, Beckys, Ruths, and others who can always be counted on to do what it takes to reach God?
It must be that miracles happened then and not now. They must have gone by the way of old hymns that we hid in our hearts then but are unknown to this generation now. It must be that my friend Debra will forever suffer with pain because no miracle exists for her. It must be that we must just sit and watch evil take over in our country.
But I know these things are not true. God is the same yesterday, today, and forever (Heb. 13:8). Jesus told us that we would do even greater works and miracles than He did (Jn. 14:12). Greater than healing, getting rid of demons, and raising the dead. Greater than providing counsel, direction, and encouragement. Greater than drying tears, lifting heavy hearts, and soothing wounds.
For the rest of my life, I want to see the "greater-than" miracles, the ones for now and not then. I love to look back on what Jesus did then, but I want to see what He can do now!
And who are the ones God will use to bring these miracles about? You and me. We're the designated people who need to stay before God until things are prayed through. As we trust God and see results with the smaller needs, our faith can be built for the bigger miracles. Let's lear how to do it, then do it, then show the next generation how to do it.
If miracles die out, it's not because they aren't waiting to happen. They're just looking for people who will not quit until they are obtained.
Won't you join me in being that people who will not give up until we get a miracle from God for our family, neighborhood, state, nation, and world? The "greater-than" miracles are waiting to be had. Let's go get them!
